About Us

In 2009, Charles and Marion Hafner purchased the funeral home. They own and operate it with their two sons, Dan and Scott Hafner. We offer a full range of funeral and cremation services, including "traditional" funerals, direct burials, memorial services, celebrations of life, and direct cremations. In 2012, we opened the Sugar River Crematory located here in Newport. We are proud to offer this service locally so that your loved one never leaves our care.

David A. Newton established the funeral home in 1876 with his two sons and we have been family owned and operated ever since. Dixi Crosby Newton took over the business from his father and carried on the profession until his death in 1959. He had moved the funeral home to its present location in 1938 following the passing of Newport’s beloved physician, Dr. John Cain, where it was his practice and residence. Clinton S. "Junior" Bartlett became a funeral director in 1942 and then a partner in 1953. Junior died in 2008 but spent most of his life as a funeral director caring for the families of the Newport area.

As a family serving families in a small community, we personally know many of the people we serve. We understand that every family is unique with different traditions, customs and beliefs. We will strive to accommodate the needs of every family. We serve all faiths with caring, professional, and personalized service.
