Charles (Bud) D. Newton

September 4, 1923 ~ April 25, 2016 (age 92) 92 Years Old

Charles D. (Bud) Newton of Lempster NH passed away on Monday April 25th 2016 at the age of 92 in Daytona Beach FL. Bud was born to parents Perley and Abbie Newton of Unity NH. 

After attending Towle High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in December 1942.  As part of the 1st Marine Division he participated in the Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa campaigns. Upon his return from Northern China, he married Francese Parks in 1950 and had three children. His four brothers and he operated a lumber business and sawmill in Unity, NH. Six days a week Bud transported loads of lumber to Hazardville, Connecticut which were used to manufacture reels. He worked for the Newport School District as a custodian/bus driver, then owned and operated school buses for the Goshen-Lempster School District. He, his wife and son drove for a number of years before retirement. As a young man Bud performed with classmates in numerous variety shows which were held in various meeting houses in the area. He was an active member of the Sunapee Mountain Grange and served as Master in the early 1950s. He served as Scout Master to the Goshen Boy Scout Troop in the 1960s and was later elected to the Board of Selectman for the Town of Lempster.

Bud could find the opening line to a poem in many things. He loved limericks and created them for his children. A poem entitled “Come Walk with Me”, which he wrote following the death of his wife, Francese, was published in print and on CD. He loved the out of doors and knew the trees on his property as friends. He particularly enjoyed tapping Maple trees and boiling sap for maple syrup, which he would combine with his beloved peanut butter on bread. Bud shared his home with his companion Squire, a noble golden retriever, for ten years.

He is survived by his daughter Gayle, his son Paul, daughters-in-law Kathleen and Donna, brothers Randolph and James, and sisters Abbie Ann and Sara.  He is preceded in death by his wife Francese, his son Michael, grandson Kyle, brothers Shirley and John, and sisters Charlotte and Pearl.

A committal service will be held on Saturday, June 4 at 11 am at the East Unity Cemetery followed at 2 pm by a memorial service at the Newton Bartlett Funeral Home in Newport NH. A reception at the Salt Hill Pub in Newport (third floor) will be held after the service.  Friends and Family are welcomed to attend. The family is grateful for condolences but declines flowers and donations.
