Welcome to the memorial page for

Leonard A. Feenstra

July 1, 1937 ~ May 9, 2016 (age 78) 78 Years Old

Leonard A. Feenstra, 78, a lifelong resident of Newport, NH, died May 9, 2016 at Pine Rock Manor in Warner, NH.

Leonard was born July 1, 1937 in Newport, NH to John and Eva (St. Cyr) Feenstra.  He attended Newport schools and later attended barbering school in Manchester, NH.

During his early years, he worked at Silsbys and Johnsons, mowed lawns and carried coal for elderly ladies.  He was also employed at Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home and did a stint at a casket company in Massachusetts.  During the late 50's, he worked for Sam Nahil in Claremont, NH and then Ken Dresser in Newport as a Barber.

In the early 60's, he was a member of the National Guard and served at Fort Bragg during the Berlin Crisis.  He was also a member of the American Legion Post 0025.

In the 70's, he opened a barber shop on Main St. in New London and then relocated to Cricenti's Shopping Plaza.  He was a Master Barber for over 55 years.  Len enjoyed each and every one of his customers and missed the barber shop talk, the people in New London and surrounding areas.  When he had to retire due to his diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease in 2015, his last words to his customers were "Comb Again"!

During his free time he enjoyed gardening, reading and taking many vacations with his wife and First Street neighbors.  Lenny was also fondly called the Mayor of First Street.  He was dependable, hard working and a true gentleman.  He was a caring and good father and a great husband.

He married his high school sweetheart, and the love of his life in 1961.  They were soon to celebrate their 57th wedding anniversary.

Leonard was predeceased by his parents and brother, Jack Feenstra.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, of Newport, NH, his sister, Nancy Winters, of East Hampton, MA, his son, Jeffrey Feenstra and wife Cindy, of Newfields, NH, his son, Mark Feenstra and companion, Rachel, of Raymond, ME, his daughter, Susan McGarry and husband Mike, of Scarborough, ME, 9 grandchildren, Justin and Jack Feenstra, Thomas, Samantha, and Stella Feenstra, and Morgan, Coleman, Meredith, and Mitchell McGarry.

According to his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services.  He will be missed by his loving family and friends.  He was a cut above the rest!  A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
