Marilyn G. (Gilmartin) Halleck

Newport, NH-Marilyn Grace (Gilmartin) Halleck, 83, of Moore Road, died Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at New London Hospital.


She was born in Pittsfield, MA on December 6, 1933 the daughter of Edward and Vera (Stetson) Gilmartin. She earned a degree in biology from the College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee, MA.


After graduation she worked at Pfizer Global Research in Groton, CT which is where she met her future husband Bill. They moved to Newport, NH in 1973. There, Marilyn was a stay-at-home mom before returning to school to get a teaching degree with a specialty in sign language. Marilyn taught special education in the Hillsboro School District and helped mainstream hearing impaired students. Later in her career she taught sign language at the Claremont VoTech.


An active member of the Berean Baptist Church in Newport, Marilyn loved the Lord and the Bible and taught Sunday School for many years. Both her children and grandchildren were spoiled by her cookies and muffins, meals made to order, and trips to the beach. In addition to her incredible cooking and baking skills, she enjoyed skiing and gardening.


Members of her family include her husband of 49 years, William L. Halleck of Newport, NH; a brother and his wife, Norman and Elizabeth Gilmartin of Osterville, MA; a daughter and her husband, Colleen and Ray Taylor of Broadlands, VA; a son and his wife, Glenn and Hillary Halleck of Newport, NH; four stepchildren, William Halleck III of Newport, NH; Dianne and her husband, Ed Strycharz of Ledyard, CT; Colin and his wife, Alice Beaudry Halleck of Newport, NH; Mark Halleck (deceased) formerly of Groton, CT; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and a nephew.


A graveside service for the family will be held in Pine Grove Cemetery. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 2pm at the Berean Baptist Church in Newport, NH.
