Marjorie (Smith) Calkin

September 6, 1927 ~ January 7, 2018 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Newport, NH: Marjorie Calkin, 90, passed away January 7, 2018 at Sullivan County Health Care after a long battle with dementia.

Marjorie was born on September 6, 1927 to Oral and Olive (Holcombe) Smith in Pike, NH.  Before moving to Newport in 1972, she worked in several different shoe shops in the Littleton, NH area.  Once in Newport, Marjorie and her husband, Thomas, started Calkin's Blueberry, a small blueberry farm.  They expanded more and more until they finally decided to sell the land, which locals may now recognize as Bartlett's Blueberry Farm.

She loved to keep busy, especially with her gardening and yard work.  You've never seen a person use a weedwacker so much!  Marjorie enjoyed cooking and baking, putting a big emphasis on family dinners and get-togethers.  She always put family first and took great delight in being an exceptional mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.  Her children describe her as being thoughtful, kind, loving, and generous; in shorter words, the absolute best.  She was just a one-of-kind person with a big heart and a great sense of humor.  She will be sorely missed.

Marjorie is predeceased by her parents, her first husband, Henry Parent (1965), her second husband, Thomas Calkin (1996), her brothers, Roland Smith (1993) and Lee Smith (1997), and her beloved kitty, Mittens.  She is survived by her daughters, Marge and her husband, Brian Gebo of Newport, NH, Shirley Perry of Newport, NH, Beverly Princiotta of Newport, NH; her son, Maurice and his wife, Christine Parent of Martinsville, VA; her brothers, Dennis and his wife, Trish Smith of Summerville, SC, Doug Smith of Summerville, SC; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; eleven great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Per Marjorie's wishes, there will be no services.

Memorial contributions in her name can be made to The Dementia Society of America by mail to PO Box 600, Doylestown, PA 18901, or online www.DementiaSociety.org/donate or to The Sullivan County Human Society, PO Box 111, Claremont, NH, 03743.
