Vieno A. Pockett

Vieno A. Pockett of Newport, N.H. passed to Heaven on October 13, 2016 after 84 years of life.

She was born in Unity, N.H. on June 15, 1932, the daughter of William and Aune Leeman, both of Finnish Heritage. Her mother gave birth to her in their Unity house while her father was driving his horse & wagon to procure the doctor. She was the eldest of four children, with two predeceased brothers, Richard and William S. Leeman, and is survived by her remaining sister Helen Boyer of Freemont, California.

She was a studious young woman and the Valedictorian of her 1950 graduating class of Towle School. While working at Dartmouth Motors she met and then married Charles Pockett, whom she was married to for 55 years, until his death in 2008. During their marriage they created a family of three boys and three girls, and managed to foster two other young boys. Vieno was an active mother in the care of her six children. She was a Brownie Leader and helped care for the girls of the Daisy Girl Scouts, and for her family she was a very busy chauffeur, chef, errand runner, seamstress, housekeeper, and awesome listener and counselor. Together Vi and Charles created the auto repair shop of C & R Service Center, of which they owned for 25 years, where she was the accountant. Upon her retirement from accounting she volunteered at the South Congregational Church and became a Deacon. She used her spiritual approach to help aid others with home visits and Hospice care. She helped many people pass to Heaven by her comforting presence of reading books and sometimes just holding his or her hand. She loved her rose garden, was an avid reader, loved to travel, and was always willing to learn. She also taught her children to rise up and use their Finnish Heritage and “Sisu,” or fortitude, to move steadfastly through the dichotomies of life.

She is survived by all of her six children who include; Richard Pockett who is married to Sheryle Pollard; Paul Pockett who is married to Wanda Wright; David Pockett, Marie Couitt who is married to Michael Couitt; Suzi Brown and Bryant Brown; and Montana E. Leeman. She  has 9 grandchildren and many beloved nieces, nephews and great grandchildren. She is greatly loved and will be missed by all.

Services will be held Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 1:00 pm at the South Congregational Church.
