Elmore Howard Wakefield, Jr., 83, of Grantham, NH died Saturday, June 3, 2017 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Springfield, MA on July 28, 1933 to Elmore and Orilla (Downer) Wakefield. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Joyce B. Cross, two sons, five grandchildren and three brothers.  He enjoyed painting, golfing, tennis, cooking, traveling and spending time with his family.

Al, as he was known by family and friends, grew up in Kennebunk, ME where he excelled in athletics and graduated from Kennebunk High School. He attended MIT in Lowell, MA and graduated from Merrimack College in North Andover, MA with a B.S. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.  He worked at MITRE Corporation in Bedford, MA for 35 years where he retired in 1995 as Manager of Engineering Services. 

A resident of Danvers, MA for 40 years, Al was a member of the Danvers Jaycees serving as President of the Local Chapter, a National Director and Second President of the Massachusetts JCI Senate. While in the Jaycees he started and led a special needs Boy Scout Troop and helped to organize local Special Olympics Events. 

In retirement, Al became very active in the local Eastman and Dartmouth Communities.  At Eastman, where he lived for 21 years, he volunteered for the ski patrol for many years, served as chairman of the recreation committee and on the South Cove Rebuilding Committee and on the Renovation Committee for the Center at Eastman.

Al volunteered for 18 years at David’s House in Lebanon, NH, where he was also a member of the Board of Directors and served as Board President for several years. 

Visiting hours will be held Sunday, June 11 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home, 42 Main St, Newport, NH.

A memorial service will be held at South Congregational Church, 20 Church Street, Newport, NH at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 12, 2017.
