Hugh Edward Odell

Newport, NH: Hugh E. Odell, 80, of Cheney Street, passed away at Valley Regional Hospital, Monday morning, April 2, 2012, following a long battle with cancer.

Hugh was born in Hillsboro, NH, April 30, 1931, son of the late Harold Wayne and Gladys (Moulton) Odell.  He was raised and educated in Sunapee and joined the Coast Guard at the age of eighteen.  He had been in two years when the Korean Conflict began and was honorably discharged in 1952.  Upon returning to New Hampshire he enrolled at New England College where he was on the ski team and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in 1957.  That led him to the Kelly-Springfield Division of Goodyear Tire and Rubber where he served as the Northeast Credit Manager for many years. He was a volunteer firefighter in Bethel, CT, where he made his home with his first wife, Dolores (Barclay) until her passing in 1984.  He returned to his native area that same year.  Hugh was a charter member and past president of the Mt. Sunapee Area Ski Club, was an avid skier and golfer and loved fishing and traveling. His true loves were his grand and great-grandchildren; they were his hobbies.

Hugh is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Jacqueline A. (Mueller) Odell, his son: Clay Odell (Ann Perry) of West Lebanon, 2 step-sons: Bryan Rush (Marie), Robbin Rush (Barbara) all of Orange Park, FL, 2 daughters: Kathleen Moss (Andrew) of Pt. Pleasant, NJ, Cynthia Root (Brian) of Toms River, NJ, 3 step-daughters: Laura Hooley (David) of Croydon, NH, Tracey Bailey (Lawrence) Newport, NH, Deborah Wood (Gerald) of Jackson, NJ, a brother: David Odell (Gale) of Springfield, GA, a sister: Edith Ann Odell of Edgewater, FL, 16 grandchildren: Kyle, Christopher, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Kaitlyn, Jessica, Allison, Amanda, Tyler, Evan, Ryley, Evan, Eric, Maggie, Abigail and Mackenzie and 5 great-grandchildren: Lindsey, Jacob, Jackson, Emily and Connor. In addition to his first wife he, Dolores, he was also predeceased by his brother Harold W. Odell.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2PM on Saturday, April 7, 2012, at the South Congregational Church.  Rev. Craig Cowing officiating.  There will be no calling hours.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
