Ilona "Polly" M. (Wiggins) Fortune

Newport, NH-Ilona M. “Polly” (Wiggins) Fortune, 93, of Summercrest in Newport and formerly of Guild, NH died Sunday, April 23, 2017.

She was born in Newport, NH on June 11, 1923 the daughter of Herman and Senja “Jennie” (Poti) Wiggins.

She graduated from Towle High School and had lived in Guild most all of her life. 

Polly was on the draft board in the 1940’s and later worked in the spinning department and as a shipping clerk for Dorr Woolen Co. for 54 years.

She was a longtime member of South Congregational Church, UCC in Newport and served in many different capacities including the choir and librarian of the choir, the South Church Evening Circle,  and the Hospitality Committee.  She had been a member of Hopeful Rebekah Lodge and loved the ocean at York Beach where she summered for many years.  Polly loved her flower gardens, enjoyed playing the piano and liked to knit and crochet.  She always had fun with her family and cooked Saturday night dinner most every week so that they could all gather together.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lester H. Fortune, Sr. 

Polly is survived by her children, Lester H. Fortune, Jr. and his wife Janet of Fairbanks, AK, Bonnie (Fortune) Flint and her husband David of Sunapee, NH and Connie (Fortune) Hardy and her husband Charles Hurburgh of Ames, IA; grandchildren, Francine (Fortune) Davis and her husband Duane, Scott Flint and his wife Katherine, Kellee and Derek Saari and Cory Flint and his wife Renee; and great grandchildren, Gregory Davis, Maxwell McLean, Harper, Jonah, Sam and Finn Flint.

A funeral service will be held at South Congregational Church, 20 Church Street, Newport, NH on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. with The Rev. Eliot Fay, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
