Walter Shultz

NEWPORT: Walter Shultz, 88, of Newport crossed over with peace and grace, on November 2, 2012. He was born September 21, 1924 as Ralph Gordon Herring, the only child of David and Ethel Parker Herring, in Reading PA. He accompanied his mother to Newport N.H. at one year of age, and when she died a year later he became a ward of Anthony and Josephine Shultz. At his mother’s request his name was changed to Walter Shultz.

Walter was educated in Newport, graduating with the class of 1943 from Towle High School. After military service during WWII, with the 1275th Combat Engineers Battalion, seeing service both in European and Pacific Theaters, Walter returned home and for a brief period worked for Budd’s Beverages in Newport as a delivery driver. In 1950 Walter entered Wentworth Institute of Technology, in Boston MA. He graduated with a degree in Industrial Electronics. He also completed course work at MIT, Cambridge MA., in Numerical Control of Machine Tools in 1954.

Additionally in his lifetime he had worked for the Boston and Maine Railroad as a yard hustler at Claremont Junction. He also worked for three years at Cone Automatic Machine Co. in Windsor VT., where he became a Tool Design Engineer. In 1954 he went to work for Jones and Lampson Machine Tool Co. (J&L), in Springfield VT., where he spent the next 33 years, in Research and Development. At the time of his retirement he was the Senior Project Engineer, prototyping automatic and CNC Turret Lathes. Walter held several patents and was instrumental in the development of many advances in numerical control machinery. He retired from J&L in 1986.

During Walter’s life he had served as a trustee of the Church of the Good Shepherd and Vice President of the Newport Senior Center. He was an officer of the Masonic Blue Lodge, Mt. Vernon #15, a 32nd Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite. He had also served as the treasurer of the Masonic High Twelve to the time of his death. For many years he was a member of the Newport Lions Club, where he had served as club treasurer. Additionally he was a past member of the Newport Moose Lodge, and had also served as a Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America. Walter was also a member of the Brewster, Gould, Lee Post of the American Legion #25, and a member of the VFW. At the time of his death he served as President of the Towle Class of ’43, and was looking forward to their 70th class reunion in 2013.

Walter is survived by his wife, Ruth Shultz, his four children Howard A. Shultz and his wife Carol of Grimstead VA. and Newport NH. His daughter Donzella R. Pelletier, of Ft. Washington MD, daughter Tammy A. Csutor and husband John, of Sutton NH., son David A. Shultz and Joanne Coulombe of Newport and step-son Wayne Smith of Newport. Additionally surviving to cherish his memory are 12 grandchildren and 30-great grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by great-grandson Wyatt Kenney, Step-sons Russell Muzzy and Bill Muzzy and his former wife Rita M. Follansbee Shultz.

Funeral Services will be held at the 10AM on Thursday, November 8, 2012, a the Church of the Good Shepherd, Park Street in Newport. Masonic Service Rites will be observed.  Burial will take place at a later time. The Reverends John and Nancy Topolewski will officiate.

Friends may call on the family from 6-8PM, Wednesday evening Nov. 7th at the Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home, 42 Main Street in Newport.
