Arhontou "Dolly" Gokas, 91, passed away at the Partridge House Assisted Living Facility in Hampton, N.H. on January 3, 2021. She was born on September 27, 1929, the daughter of Charles S. and Kitsa (Psirras) Gokas.
After graduating from high school in Newport, she began a lifetime career with New England Telephone Company as a telephone operator and eventually through hard work earned a promotion to supervisor. She was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers, a nonprofit charitable organization.
Dolly was a devout parishioner of the St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, where she served on the church council, was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society and led the church choir for many years. She was honored by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese on several occasions for her dedication.
With a strong commitment to the Newport community, and unquestionable support for her chosen political candidates, Dolly volunteered extensively to several local and statewide causes. She loved music and story-telling and was well known for her "jolly Dolly" persona and will be remembered for her infectious joy and laughter.
Dolly was predeceased by her parents, a sister Bessie and brother in law Spiro Papageorge, brother, Arthur and sister in law Lillian Gokas, brother, Spiro Gokas and sister Evangeline Gokas.
She is survived by her nephew, Charles Gokas and wife, Lindy and their children, Tara and Chaz of Dexter, Maine, and her niece Kathryn Casey, of Manchester, N.H. and her son Zachary Knox and his children, Lucas and Shaun, of Sanford, Maine, and several cousins.
There will be no calling hours. A private funeral service will be conducted.
