Bertram V. Mills used up his allotted time in life, passing away on October 30, 2022 at Valley Regional Hospital.
He started his allotted time on September 15, 1935, in St. Johnsbury, VT, the son of Bertram C. and Vivian Vear Mills. The ancestral family came from Johnson, VT, with the first of the Mills family arriving there before 1800.
Bert attended elementary schools in St. Johnsbury and Lyndonville, where he "graduated from the eighth grade" and went on to attend Lyndon Institute. In his senior year his parents moved to Concord, NH, and Bert graduated from Concord High School in 1953. He went on to obtain a B.Ed. from Plymouth Teachers College.
He worked as a teacher of biology and general science in two different high schools and after getting a M.Ed. from Boston University, was a guidance director at two other NH high schools.
In the late 1960's, Bert became the first academic dean in the NH Vocational Technical College System, working in the Claremont college, now known as River Valley Community College. He also served as interim President.
This was a significant professional place for Bert, as he enjoyed 29 years of satisfying work with a number of dedicated faculty members and staff. More importantly, he immediately met up with Idabelle Frazer, the Registrar at the College, who quite soon became his wife and closest friend.
After retirement Bert and Idabelle became avid if not expert golfers, became gardeners, enjoyed retirement to the fullest. There was time for road races, hiking, lunches, summer travel to Switzerland particularly, but to other wonderful places in Europe as well.
He was at one time a marathon runner, a gardener, a genealogist, a golfer, a hiker, a musician (sort of!), a cook.
He leaves behind his wife Idabelle (Frazer) Mills of Newport, NH, his sons Bertram Richard "Rick" Mills, his wife Jeannette (Emery) of Dummerston, VT, Mark Mills, of Enfield, NH and Robert James (BJ) Mills of Durham, NC. In addition he leaves behind beautiful granddaughters: Haley Parker Mills, Sadie Mills, both of Dummerston, VT, and Elena Mills and Taylor Mills, of Hillsborough, NC.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held on Saturday May 13, 2023 from 1-3 PM at the Newport Golf Club, 112 Unity Road, Newport, NH. Friends and relatives are warmly invited. If so wished, contributions to your favorite charity can be made. No flowers expected or desired.
Ultimately his cremated remains will be mixed with those of Idabelle and buried in family plots in Northfield and Johnson, VT.
Arrangements are with the Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home and Sugar River Crematory, 42 Main Street, Newport, NH.
