Betty Jones, 87, entered into rest on Monday, June 24, 2024. Betty is now reunited in peace with those she loved who preceded her in death, including her beloved husband, Fred Jones, and her son, Kevin Jones, both of whom she missed dearly. Betty issurvived by her two children: Charlene Betourney (GA) and Scott Jones (VT).
Betty enjoyed volunteering for the Newport Thrift Store. For more than a decade Betty worked at Sturm, Ruger & Company. She took immense pride in her work and fondly recalled working alongside a small group of women who meticulously hand-checkered gun handles and sometimes engraved initials of notable personalities.
Born in Newport and a graduate of Towel High in 1955, Betty and Fred settled in St. Cloud, Florida, where their two sons were born. However, homesickness drew them back to Newport, where Betty found deep joy and contentment. She had a passion for attending yard sales, often purchasing stuffed animals to donate to local hospitals and churches. Active in St. Patrick’s parish, Betty was deeply involved in her community.
Betty spent many holidays traveling with Fred to visit their grandsons in Cape Cod and locally with Kevin’s family in Sunapee. Later in life, she cherished spending Christmas with her daughter and son-in-law in Georgia, frequently recalling these moments as some of her most beloved memories. Betty’s cheerful smile and friendly waves from her garage in "the grove" will be fondly remembered. She took immense pride in her home and gardens, finding continuous joy in both. Her memory will forever reside in the hearts of her neighbors who knew her well.
The friends that Betty made over the years are countless. Most of the friends she had growing up are still some of the family’s closest friends to this day. Over the last ten years of Betty’s life, Janice McMahon and her daughter Mandy became invaluable caregivers, advocates, and beloved friends, enabling Betty to continue living independently at home. Their unwavering support meant the world to Betty. No greater friends did she have than in Janice and Mandy.
Betty’s final arrangements will be kept private. Those wishing to honor her memory are encouraged to donate to the Newport Food Pantry or The Jake Maxfield Connection.
