Claremont, NH: Clifford Barber, previously a resident of Croydon, NH, passed away on November 24, 2025.
He was born in Newport on January 30, 1942 to Ernest and Mildred (Sherman) Barber.
Clifford attended and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1960, then joined the U.S. Navy. He served for four years, becoming Senior Petty Officer 3rd Class on the destroyer, USS Fiske.
After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1964, Clifford came home and met his future wife, Sally Hooper. They celebrated their 61st anniversary this year, renewing their vows at the VA Hopsital a week prior to Clifford's passing. His marriage to Sally came with a ready-made family, her daughter Laurie. Clifford adored Laurie, raising her like his own and forming a special bond.
Clifford has always been a hard worker. He worked at Dorr Woolen for over 10 years, most of that time as a Foreman for second shift, then he worked the next 40 years at Sturm Ruger as a Machinist. At a young age, he volunteered as a fire fighter in Grantham, where he helped put out the fire on the Ledges, and then volunteered for Croydon for 15 years.
When Clifford wasn't working, he was an outdoorsman. He loved walking the woods, repairing stone walls when he came across one, snowshoeing in winter, fishing, rabbit hunting, and family camping trips to Booth Bay Harbor. He also had a love for beagles. He joined the Beagle Club in Unity around 1980, and had been a member ever since, serving as President of the Club for a few years. His beagle, Johnny, was able to visit him in the hospital twice, thanks to Krista Duval, the family friend who adopted Johnny when Clifford got sick and has been a big help to the family for over 3 years.
His surviving family includes his loving wife Sally Barber, his 'Pumpkin' Laurie Goyette, his grandson Clifford Locke, his granddaughter Melissa Fulton, his great grandson Ian, and his sister-in-law, Linda Carley, who has been a special help to the family. He was predeceased by his parents and several extended family members.
Family and friends are welcome to attend the graveside service with military honors at 12:00 pm at Pine Grove Cemetery on Sunapee Street in Newport, Saturday, December 6, 2025. There will be a celebration of life gathering at the Croydon Fire Station following the service, 828 NH-10, Croydon, NH.
