Dorothy Field, 98, passed away March 5, 2026 in Brunswick, ME from complications after a fall. She was born in Newport, NH on November 13, 1927 as the only child of James O. Paul and Clara Swain Paul. She grew up on a farm in Unity, graduated from Newport High School, and worked for many years in the front office of the Brampton woolen mill. She married the love of her life, Carson M. Field, a marriage lasting 52 years until his death in 2002. They resided on top of Lear Hill in Goshen, raising their family of two daughters. Her work transitioned to Newport Savings Bank as an accountant, daily balancing five branch bank accounts by hand, to the penny, before computers.
She was an active long term member at the Claremont Seventh-day Adventist church routinely taking people to church who needed a ride. On Sabbath afternoons she taught her daughters the gift of visiting the elderly, shut-ins, and those in the local County home. With beautiful penmanship, she wrote letters to encourage others. She was a blessing to many and many were a blessing to her. She described the secret of her longevity as attending the Newport Senior Center exercise classes from the age of 60 to 90 where she made many friends. Over the last couple of years, with her daughter in Maine, she volunteered for "It's My Very Own", an organization making quilts/bags with necessities for children who are displaced/adopted.
She lived her last year with her daughter and son-in-law in a cabin on a pond in Maine. She loved sitting in the recliner at the window watching various birds at the feeders, counting ducks, loons, and eagles on the pond, and watching various wildlife. She loved her kitty and anything cat related. She was a voracious reader. Other loves: Family and friends. Driving anything!!! The first robin on the year. Pussywillows and lady slippers. Listening to hunting and fishing stories. Making sugar-on-snow and maple candy. Cooking with new recipes. Making donuts. Going for joy rides.
She is survived by her two daughters, Paula Field-Vargas from Salem, OR, and Rosanne Marquis and her husband Russell Marquis from Vassalboro, ME as well as 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
She requested no memorial service. In lieu of flowers etc, the family suggests that the reader take an elderly person out to lunch, or go visit an elderly friend or relative in memory of her.
