Newbury, NH: Douglas S. Champney, Sr., passed away peacefully on August 2, 2025 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center after several years battling with ALS. He was born on April 30, 1966 in Bellows Falls, VT to the late Peggy (Waterman) Lockwood and Don Champney, Sr.
Doug grew up in Newport and spent most of his life in the area. He was a good guy who loved his family and would do anything for them. He enjoyed fishing, football, the Patriots being his favorite team, wrestling, bowling, and making people smile and laugh. Always a hard worker, he did many different jobs over the years, including logging, landscaping, manufacturing, and food service jobs. He liked to ride motorcycles and loved his Harley. He was very close to and adored his two dogs, Meg and Coco.
Doug was predeceased by his parents, sisters, Bertha Smith and Laura Ash, brother in law, Jeffrey Ash, and grandson, Wyatt Champney.
Surviving family members include his father, Kenneth Lockwood; his beloved wife of 36 years, Phyllis; children, Douglas Champney, Jr. of Newbury, Travis Champney, Sr. of Newbury, and Casey Champney of Newport; siblings, Cindy LeBlanc (Brad) of Unity, Don Champney, Jr. of Newport, Chris Champney of Newport, Jean Emery (Dan) of Wyoming, and Jay Lockwood (Cassandra) of Enfield; his uncle Darryl Waterman of Lempster; grandchildren, Douglas Champney III, Zwaide Champney, James Perry IV, Kileyana Fernald, Colton Fernald, Zaharrah Fernald, and Travis Champney; and many extended family members and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 6, 2025 at 1:00 PM at the Newport Veteran's Club, 118 John Stark Highway, Newport, NH. Please bring a dish to share.
