Eleanor (Mann) Thompson Obituary
Eleanor (Mann) Thompson, loving mother of two daughters, passed away May 13th , after a long battle with dementia. Her family is grateful to the staff in the Memory Care Unit at Sunapee Cove, who provided Eleanor with loving care during her illness.
Eleanor was born December 9, 1934 in Claremont, NH, to Hazel and Harold Mann. On June 5, 1954 she married Louis H. Thompson, to whom she was married for 52 years. She later spent 17 years with her devoted companion, Mayland P. Osgood.
Her entire working career was in the printing business. She began as an apprentice linotype operator while a student at the University of New Hampshire. Later, she worked at the Barrett Press in Newport, the Eagle Publishing Company, which produced the Eagle Times newspaper, then the Newport Publishing Company, which published the Argus Champion newspaper. Her career spanned many technological advances in her field, from lead type on a linotype to the evolution of typesetting and layouts as computers matured. The last 27 years of her career were spent at the Country Press, which produces the Kearsarge Shopper. She had many valued relationships with her coworkers at the Country Press.
Eleanor was an avid lover of nature, who spent her entire life loving and protecting the local flora and fauna. She was an accomplished gardener who created gardens and landscaping around her home that complimented the natural setting of the surrounding woods and river.
In keeping with her loving and generous nature, Eleanor spent 12 years on the Board of Directors of the Area Home Health Agency, serving as president for 2 years. She also coordinated a clothing service, providing assistance to families in the area. Eleanor spent many hours at the family cottage on Mountainview Lake in Sunapee, NH, enjoying both the lake and those who lived there. She was a dedicated member of the Mountainview Lake Protective Association, serving 2 years as president. As part of her commitment to protect the quality of life in and around the lake, she participated in the state water quality sampling for 23 years.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, Hazel and Harold, her husband, Louis, and her companion, Mayland. She is survived by her daughters Dawn (Jeff) and Laura, two granddaughters, Linda and Emily (Gagan), brothers Charlie (Carolann) and Lloyd (Penny), and several nieces.
A memorial gathering will be held in the future at the discretion of the family. Please let us know via email to dawnho@aol.com if you would like to be informed when that gathering is scheduled.
