On October 9, 2024 Elizabeth (Betty) Woodhull Maiola, 93, of Newport, NH passed away surrounded by the love of her family.
Betty was born July 17, 1931 in Newport, NH, the daughter of Remington and Gladys Woodhull. She was a lifelong resident of Newport, married to her beloved husband Anthony Maiola for 68 years raising two children, Dawn Ranney and Joel Maiola. Betty loved her family and her community of Newport.
Betty believed deeply in giving back to the community and was actively involved in various elected capacities and volunteered in many organizations throughout the town, county and state. In Newport, Betty served as a member of the Newport Board of Selectmen, School Board, the Newport Revitalization Committee, Recreation Advisory Board, Airport Commission, the Economic Development Committee and the Newport Opera House Association. Betty also served as an Advisory Board member of the Lake Sunapee Savings Bank, board member of Valley Regional Hospital and the United Way of Sullivan County. She was honored along with her husband Tony as "Citizens of the Year" by the Newport Chamber of Commerce in 2001. Betty proudly served as a Trustee of Kurn Hatin Homes in Vermont for many years.
Betty, a longtime Justice of the Peace, performed numerous wedding ceremonies, many of which took place in her own backyard. While some weddings were performed for family and friends, many were for people who could not afford the high cost of a wedding venue. She would always make sure the flowers and settings were perfect and the event was memorable and special for the couple. For the Maiola family, the weddings were an all hands on deck event. Often time the $25.00 wedding fee was overlooked. Betty was always willing to assist any family in need, was intense in her compassion and would never be shy in asking other members of the Newport business community to step up. "No" was never an acceptable answer.
Politically, Betty was the official tour guide of downtown Newport for Presidents, Governors, Senators and members of Congress. She was a trusted friend to many and they all knew that her advice and commitment to the cause was to be taken seriously. And she knew how to put together a reception and a crowd!
Betty was a loving, devoted wife to Anthony Maiola. They were inseparable, enjoying community events and taking road trips throughout the state. She was fiercely loyal to her family and was never afraid to share her thoughts. She was a wonderful mother to Dawn and Joel, her five grandchildren Kyle, Anna, Ryan, Lauren and Kate as well as her five great grandchildren Brooklyn, Joshua, Camden, Claire and Laney.
Betty was predeceased by her father Remington Woodhull, mother Gladys Woodhull and sister Bobbie Violette.
The Maiola family thanks the wonderful and loving staff of the Woodlawn Care Center for their care and support.
A private family service will be held in her honor.
