Elmer Elsworth Stout passed away on July 31,2025 at Woodlawn Healthcare Center in Newport, NH, where he had been a resident for several years. The Woodlawn caregivers were of great comfort and kindness to Elmer and the family during his final years of struggling with Parkinson’s Disease.

Elmer was born on Nov. 9, 1933 in Hatfield, Pennsylvania.

Elmer served in the US Army, was trained in the Signal Corps and stationed in Turkey.

He married Mary Elizabeth Moyer on June 2, 1956 in Boyertown, Penn. Elmer & Mary had 5 children, Gregory, Jeffery, Donna, Brian, Patricia. They lived in Boyertown for several years, eventually moving to Easton, Penn., then Southbridge, Mass., before settling in Newport.

Elmer & Mary also lived in Goshen, Croydon, and Sunapee.

Before Elmer retired, his employment was in sales, delivery and merchandising for various snack foods, especially Wise Potato Chips, earning him the nickname The Wise Guy. He also worked as a Boyertown policeman, at the Boyertown Casket Factory, he also owned a Sundries business and bartended at Newport Golf Club.

During the active part of his life Elmer played golf regularly. He also bowled on a team where he twice rolled the perfect game, thus having his name listed in the USBC, where sanctioned perfect games (300) are recorded. He was an avid fan of New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox. Elmer also loved playing his Lowrey Organ (especially for Mary) and had a passion for puzzles.

Elmer and Mary were members of the Croydon Community Church, and previously the South Congregational Church.

He is preceded in death by Mary, his wife of 68 years, as well as his mother-in-law Irma Moyer Bensing.

He is survived by sons Gregory (Ann), Jeffrey (Belinda) of Newport, and Brian (Patricia) of White River Junction, Vt. And daughters Donna Geyer (Mark) of South Carolina and Patricia Quimby (Frank) of Newport.

His older sister, Evelyn Stevens resides in Pennsylvania.

Elmer is also survived by fifteen grandchildren. Maria, Jeremy (Jacqueline), Jacob (Keri), Rachel, Monica (partner Ed), Dominic and Julia Stout; Edward (Jennifer)and Joshua Stout (Brittany), and Sharissa (Patrick) Sowell; David (partner Taylor) and Timothy (partner Rachel) Umbrecht; Emily (Kevin) Witt; Scott and Douglas Quimby.

Great-grandchildren are Dylan, Caleb, Hayden, Bryce, and Leah Palmer; Henry and Joseph Stout; Micah Stout; Samuel Sowell; Joel Witt; Sofia Estep Umbrecht and 1 more great-grandchildren expected.

A Family “Celebration of Life” will be held mid-September.
