Georgios "George" Souliotis Obituary

Georgios (George) loannis Souliotis of New London New Hampshire, passed peacefully at his home at the age of 97, surrounded by the love of his family.

George was born on September 26, 1926 in the village of Agios Georgios, Karepenisi, Greece to his parents loannis Souliotis and Sophia Gioldasis Souliotis.  George was married to his loving wife Aliki Tampasis Souliotis for 70 wonderful years.  They spent their first few decades of marriage building their family with humble beginnings, farming and harvesting olive trees in the mountains of Evrytania, Greece.  In 1969, and together with their four children, they immigrated to United States, arriving in New York City. George did electrical work for several years, before moving his family to Haverhill, Massachusetts, where he worked as shoe maker and was surrounded by extended family and a large Greek community.  Years later, he and his wife relocated to New Hampshire to assist their children as they began their family restaurant businesses in New Hampshire and Vermont.

George will be remembered as a hardworking, humble, and proud family man.  He treasured his family and was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all that knew and loved him.  His most treasured moments were spent surrounded by his generations of children, sharing stories over coffee, meals or cherished holidays.  George had a deep connection to his native Greece, and in his retirement loved spending extended summers back in the village, harvesting olives and visiting with family and friends who remained there.

In addition to his wife Aliki, his family members include his four children Sophia and her husband Kostas Katsanos of New London, NH, Zoi and her husband Kostas Dimakis of Merrimack, NH, John and his wife Anna Souliotis of Williston, VT, and Frank and his wife Stacey Souliotis of Salem, NH.  His immense pride was doting on his nine grandchildren, their spouses, nine great-grandchildren, and many beloved family members both in the United States and in Greece.  He is predeceased by his brother Vangelli Souliotis and his grandson George Katsanos.

Calling hours will be held Monday, May 1st at 10:30 AM at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 45 Winter St, Newport, NH. Funeral and interment services will immediately follow at 11:00 AM at the church with interment services at Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport, NH.

We kindly ask, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in George's name to St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, PO Box 428, Newport, NH 03773.

Georgios is derived from the word farmer and earth-worker, and so appropriate given the love of his farmland and humble beginnings in Greece.  May his memory be eternal.

Keep comfort in knowing that we never lose the people we love, even to death.  They continue to participate in every act, thought, and decision we make in life.  Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories.
