Geraldine Bacon Obituary

Geraldine Towne Bacon, 95, died peacefully in her sleep the morning of New Year's Day, January 1, 2019. She was living in Goshen, NH at the time, in the care of her daughter Heidi. She is survived by her daughters Heidi Wilcox of Goshen, NH and Gail Stewart of Pascoag, RI, and her grandson Jesse George Wilcox of Alstead, NH. She was predeceased by her husband of 71 years, George W. Bacon, originally from Lilesville, NC and her son, George W. Bacon III.

Geraldine had previously lived in Rehoboth, MA, Old Lyme, CT, and Longmeadow, MA, and was born in Biddeford, ME. She was a life-long lover of all things Maine and enjoyed staying at her mother's beach house at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport as much as possible. She was a 12th generation Mainer and very proud of it. Gerry, as her friends called her, became an accomplished genealogist for both her husband's family and her own, digging through old abandoned trunks in family attics discovering long lost stories of family members.

Gerry was a beautiful woman of exquisite taste, collector of art and antiques, and an accomplished amateur artist in her own right, with pastels being her preferred medium. An avid gardener, she was an active member of the Rehoboth Garden Club and often the life of the party at their meetings. Gerry had a natural wit, a lovely smile, and was warm and friendly to all. She was a den mother, a girl scout leader, and a defender of the environment before it became popular to be so. A lifetime lover of animals, as a child she would put the kitten paw prints in her autograph book and push them around in a doll carriage, but mostly she was a dog lover. She and her husband raised many English Setters through the years and loved and treated each one as a family member. She prided herself on being a mother and raising her children right and loved being a grandmother where she and her husband went on many adventures with their grandson. Often historic in nature, they visited many covered bridges in NH and VT and many old cemeteries, always enjoying the lovely historic homes they passed on the way. She also adored her many nieces and nephews from both sides of the family.

As a child Gerry was raised by her beloved Nanny on her country home in Biddeford, surrounded by loving uncles and aunts. Later she attended Miss Marcel's School in western MA, where she met her future husband, George, after he had returned from overseas serving as a tail gunner in WWII. They eloped and were married in The Little Church around the Corner in New York City.

The family will be having a private memorial in Maine in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donation may be sent to the ASPCA in her name at aspca.org/donate/memorial.
