John L. King Sr., 95, passed away Friday, June 27, 2025 at the Woodlawn Healthcare Center in Newport, NH after a brief stay.
John was born February 15, 1930 in Newport, NH to the late Newton and Exilia (Audette) King. He attended area schools and spent most of his life in North Newport.
He married Hazel J. Gould on July 31, 1948 and they shared 76 wonderful years, as he would say, "we've had a good life." They loved their home in North Newport where they raised their children and would often be seen hard at work outside keeping everything looking beautiful.
John was a truck driver most of his life working at Cott Quality Beverages, Johnson's Distributing Co., and most recently at Carroll Concrete driving the big powder truck, retiring from there in 1992.
He was a past member of the North Newport Union Chapel, member of the First Congregational Church of Croydon where he also sang with the Croydon Church Singers and bowled with the Church Holy Rollers. He was a member of the National Guards and the Forester's Club in Newport. He was president of a bowling league at Bud's Bowling Alley in Newport. John did a lot of volunteer work for community and church. He started keeping a diary in 1964 and wrote faithfully for 60 years until 2024 when he had to stop because of his failing eyesight.
John was a very giving man and supported many charities. He was always there to help family, friends and neighbors.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel, son John King Jr., (partner Judy Knight), Janet Eaklor and husband William, Joni Bliss and fiancée Walter Perry, and James King and wife Kandy all of Newport. Grandchildren Amy King of Lakehills, TX., Heidi Hillock of Springfield, VT, Jamee King, Claremont, NH, and Sarah Foote also of Claremont, 5 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a sister-in-law, Gertrude Lewis of Newport. He was predeceased by siblings Charles, Lester, George, Robert, Edna (Earle), Dorothy (MaHair) and Cora King.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 26 at 1:00 pm at the North Newport Cemetery on Oak Street.
Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.
