Newport, NH: John V. Mullen, 93, passed away peacefully at his home in Newport surrounded by family on June 17, 2024. He was born on July 11,1930 in Boston, MA to the late James and Bridget (Doyle) Mullen.
John attended St. Gregory’s Grammar School in Dorchester, MA, Boston College High School, and Dorchester High School for Boys, graduating in 1948. He worked for Hendries Ice Cream in Milton, MA where he was plant manager. While working for Hendries, he met the love of his life, Patricia Sullivan, and were married on Valentine’s Day in 1953. They shared 59 years together before her death in 2012.
John and Pat moved to New Hampshire in 1964 where they built a happy life. He worked as a salesman for many years, retiring in 2010 at the age of 80. He was a hardworking and dedicated employee, always putting others before himself. John was happiest puttering around his house and doing yard work. He enjoyed making wood crafts, including birdhouses and seasonal napkin holders. He looked forward to reading newspapers and he considered the Boston Herald a treat. He enjoyed a few scratch tickets every now and then, hoping to hit it big! John was witty, had a great sense of humor, and was a friend to all. Without a doubt, his greatest pride and joy were his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.
John was predeceased by his parents; wife, Patricia Mullen, brother, James A Mullen; sister Barbara Mullins; and grandson, Ryan Michael Truell.
Surviving family members include his daughters, Joanne (Michael) Truell of Newport, and Nancy (Barney) Smith of Newport; son, John (Rose) Mullen of Las Vegas, NV; 6 grandchildren, Bethany (Chad) Gibbs, Valerie (Cassie) Truell, Jennifer (Sarah) Smith, Elizabeth (Tyler) Bates, Siobhan (Christopher) Katilie, and Logan (Meagan) Mullen; 5 great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Harrison Gibbs, Jaxson Truell, Charlotte Katilie, and Theodore Mullen; sister in law, Lorraine C.
