Marjorie Kanakis Obituary

Marjorie (Bardis) Kanakis passed away on Friday, April 12, 2019 at the age of 94.

Born in Northfield VT, daughter of George and Mary (Megalogenis) Bardis, the third of eight children, Marjorie lived most of her young life in Keene, NH where she attended Keene High School. 
She married Solon Kanakis in 1946. They were married for 72 years.  After their marriage Marjorie and Solon lived in Decatur, Illinois, Keene, NH and Newport, NH where they raised four children.

Marjorie was a dedicated mother and homemaker.  She worked as a machinist during WWII and also worked for many years as a bookkeeper at Shop-Rite and Violette’s Market before her retirement.

Marjorie was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved spending time with her family.  She was a great cook and was known for her delicious Greek pastries.  She had an active social life and enjoyed outings with her many friends, co-workers and family.

She was a member of the St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Newport.  Her dedication to her church was noted, having received the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston Ministry Award.

Marjorie is survived by her husband Solon, her sons, Nicholas (Regina) and Mark (Debra) and daughters, Leigh and Catherine (Roland).  She was known as Grammy to her grandchildren and Yia Yia to her great grandchildren:  Nichole (John), Ariann (Denis), Gabriel (Jessie), Benjamin (Nadine), Nathan (Aimee), Allison (Alex), Nicholas, Emily (Steven), Nathan, Samantha, Charlotte, and Eleanor.  Marjorie is survived by siblings Helen Brountas and Sonia Pelekis. She was predeceased by her siblings Evelyn Bacopulos, Velma Rowe, John Bardis, Katherine Maydwell, and James Bardis.  She is also survived by her step great grandchildren, many cousins, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

A service will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. at The United Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd, 11 Park Street, Newport, NH. Private burial will be in Monadnock Cemetery, Keene, NH at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Marjorie’s name to the Town of Newport Recreation Department or the St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Newport.
