Newport, NH: Melvin R. George, 84, died peacefully at his home with his family on September 24, 2020 after a period of declining health. He was born on August 2, 1936 in East Derry, NH to the late Harry E. George, Sr. and Loretta M. (Kingsbury) Roddy.
Melvin served in the US Air Force as an airplane mechanic. He has lived in Newport for more than 70 years. Melvin married Shirley (Bridgeo) George and they shared almost 46 years together. Melvin was an active person, always looking for a project. He loved nature and being outdoors, puttering in his yard or raking the lawn. He enjoyed woodworking and built his house. He liked music, playing the keyboard, guitar, and accordion. Melvin spent more than 20 years working at Dorr Woolen before his retirement in 1997.
He was predeceased by his parents, stepmother, Amy Patnaude, daughter, Sandra George, siblings, Harry George, Jr., Kay Derosier, Sonny Walch, Caroline Dines, and Kenny Walch.
Surviving family members include his loving wife, Shirley George, children, Wanda George, Danny George and his wife, Sharon, Linda Leavitt and her fiancé, Wesley Mansur, Tony George and his wife, Nicole, and Jody George and his good friend, Donna Tilton, siblings, Roger Walch, Evelyn Walch, Beverly Heck, Doreen Demers, Beverly Smith, and Barbara Fleeman, many grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and lots of extended family members and friends.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Newport Moose Lodge on Saturday October 17, 2020 from 1 - 4 PM.
