Robert Lucas, Sr.

Newport, NH: Robert Lucas, Sr., 84, passed away peacefully at Woodlawn Care Center in Newport on December 8, 2022 after several years of declining health.  He was born on August 22, 1938 on Long Island, NY to the late Fred and Gertrude (Blickenstocker) Lucas. 

Bob grew up on Long Island where he met the love of his life, Barbara Burlison.  They married and shared 64 years together.  They moved their young family to Newport, NH in 1971 after spending summers at the family home on Lake Sunapee.  Bob owned and operated Robert Lucas and Sons Well Drilling Company for many years.  He got started in the industry with his father on Long Island before running his own company.  He was a good businessman and a great well driller.  He was well liked by his customers and business associates and made many friends over the years.  Bob was also a meat cutter in his younger days and ran East Mountain Butcher Shop with his friend, Dean Swenson. 

Bob loved cars.  He enjoyed antique cars, restoring old cars, going to car shows, and owning classic cars.  He and Barbara travelled the country in their motor home visiting many states and also liked going on cruises. 

Bob was a good provider and a wonderful family man.  He was a good husband and father, and a great Pop-Pop to his 6 grandsons and 5 great-grandchildren. 

He survived a battle with brain cancer before spending the last 9 years of his life at Woodlawn in Newport.  Special thanks to all the wonderful staff and caregivers at Woodlawn for their care and support over the years.

Bob was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Fred, Bill, Georgie, Raymond, Mildred, Bonnie, and Katie.

Surviving family members include his wife, Barbara Lucas of Newport; children, Teresa Ash and her husband, Phil, Robert Lucas, Jr. and his wife, Barbie, and Kevin Lucas, all of Newport; grandchildren, Jason Ash and his wife, Melissa, Travis Ash and his wife, Tessa, Corey, Todd, Ethan, and Spencer Lucas; great-grandchildren, McKenzie,  Hannah, Logan, Caitlin, and Lexi; and many friends and extended family members.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Woodlawn Care Center, Resident Fund, or to Lake Sunapee VNA and Hospice.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday December 15, 2022 from 6 to 8 PM at Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home, 42 Main Street, Newport, NH.  A funeral will be held the following day, Friday, at 1 PM at South Congregational Church in Newport with burial to follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.  A reception will be held at the Moose Lodge on Sunday, December 18, 2022 at 2 PM.
