Russell Currier Obituary

Newport, NH: Russell C. Currier, 75, died on May 13, 2020 at his home, after a long battle with cancer.  He was born in Lebanon, NH on September 1, 1944, son of Clyde and Helen (Snow) Currier.

Mr. Currier graduated from Towle High School with the class of 1962.  He worked for 16 years at Newport Hospital in various roles such as purchasing agent, supervisor of housekeeping, and maintenance.  He also served as a purchasing consultant to New London Hospital in New London, NH.

In 1984, Russell and his wife purchased Foxchase, a 26 room Georgian Colonial Home on 130 acres in South Sutton, NH.  They owned and operated it for more than 20 years.  They got the home licensed for assisted living for 12 older clients, whom they allowed to bring pets. 

The Curriers remained there until 2005, when they returned to Newport.  Russell then studied and became a pharmacy technician, working at Rite Aid in Newport for 3 years.  He then became a volunteer at Newport Senior Center, where he managed and staffed the gift shop.  For several years he cooked rings of sausage on the Common at the summer fundraiser and at the annual Center yard sale.

Mr. Currier was the President, Vice President, and  Treasurer for the Newport Area Home Health Agency.  He served on the Board of Trustees at the Newport Hospital, and as President, Vice President, and Secretary for the NH Association of Residential Care Homes.    He enjoyed square dancing with the Bradford Country Squares. 

Mr. Currier was predeceased by his first wife, June (Seace) Currier who died in 1978.  He also lost a brother, Cecil "Danny" Currier and a sister, Joyce Gobin. 

He is survived by his second wife, Deirdre (Hickey) Currier, and two sons with his first wife, Jeffrey Leon Currier and his wife Lee of Forrest City, Arkansas and son Jonathan Scott Currier and his partner Tiffany Demayo of Newport, NH.  Mr. Currier has a granddaughter, Sarah Currier, mother of two great-grandchildren, Anya (2 years old) and Steven (5 months old), another granddaughter, Lindsay Norling resides in Arkansas. 

Surviving family include, three brothers, Eddie Currier of Alabama, Thomas Currier of Newport, NH, and Larry Currier of Croydon, NH, two aunts, Shirley Jennings of Goshen, NH and Margaret Currier of Claremont, NH and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. 

Throughout his life, Mr. Currier was well known by family and friends for his amazing Christmas decorations and his excellent cooking showcased at summer and holiday get-togethers.  He will be sorely missed by all who enjoyed his generous nature, dry New England humor, and light blue-eyed-gaze with a twinkle. 

Calling hours will be held at the Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home on July 17, 2020 from 5 to 7 pm. A graveside service will be held the next day at Grantham Memorial Cemetery on July 18, 2020 at 1 pm.
