Sandra "Sandy" Kitchen Obituary

Newport, NH: Sandra “Sandy” Kitchen passed from this life on May 16, 2025 at the Jack Byrne Palliative Care facility at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center after a brief illness. Sandy was born on November 25, 1958 in Dover-Foxcroft, ME to the late Roger A. and Joyce E. (McDonald) Race. Her first home was Greenville, ME. By the time she started school, her family had moved to Peru, NY where her father worked for Diamond International Corporation. Sandy attended the Peru Central School system through her High School graduation in 1976. She became an Xray Technologist after studying in Albany, NY and promptly moved to Albuquerque, NM. It was there that she met Terry Kitchen. They were married in 1981. They later moved to Round Rock, TX and then to Salem, VA. After Terry’s death, Sandy and her mother moved to Vermont and then to Newport, NH for a position in the Xray Department at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

Sandy was an avid and accomplished quilter and embroiderer. Together with her mother, her sister, and her sister-in-law, she enjoyed visiting quilt shops anywhere in New England. She felt most at home at the family camp on Piper Pond in Abbot, ME. Sandy would often be out on the pond in her kayak and adored watching the loons that were always present. She always kept a large variety of flowers in her garden around her house. She never met an animal that she didn’t instantly fall in love with.

Sandy is survived by her sister, Barbara VanHouten, of Windsor, VT; her brother, Kenneth Race (Sandra) of Sarasota, FL; nephews Alan Domingue (Heather) of Hinesburg, VT, Aaron Domingue of Springfield, NH, and Thomas Race (Jennifer) of Granville, OH; her niece Erin Vanderwall (Adam) of Newport Beach, CA; and five great-nieces and nephews (Martin Domingue, Elle Domingue, Skyler Race, Emmalynn Race, and Madeline Vanderwall).

Sandy was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Terry; her brother-in-law, Bruce VanHouten; and her dogs, Max and Abby.

The final arrangements will be performed by Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home of Newport, NH with the interment being at Sangerville Village Cemetery in Sangerville, ME. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in remembrance of Sandy to the Jack Byrne Palliative Care Center in Lebanon, NH or to the charity of your choice.
