Newport, NH: Sylvette Grace (Bowen) Abbott, 91, passed away on September 27, 2023, at Woodlawn Care Center in Newport, NH, while listening to Johnny Cash.
Sylvette was born in Littleton, NH, on April 15, 1932, the first child of Carl and Doris (Crowe) Bowen. She attended schools in Lyman and Lisbon, NH. Sylvette moved to Sunapee and worked at the Brockelbank Hotel in New London and at Seven Hearth’s Inn in Sunapee. After marrying Corliss (Sonny) Abbott, she lived in Sunapee as a homemaker and mother until moving to Newport. When Maple Manor Housing for the Elderly and Handicapped opened in Newport in 1980, Sylvette was one of the first to move in. An easy-going person, she was also very determined and fiercely independent. With the assistance of many special caregivers and her loving family, she was able to continue living at home until it became necessary to move on to her next home. While at Woodlawn she received the caring support that enabled her to live safely and with dignity for the next three years. In 2020, Sylvette was proud to have been honored with a plaque from Maple Manor recognizing her forty years of residence.
Through the years, Sylvette treasured her time with family, she was especially proud of her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She spent time doing needlework and puzzles, and collected salt & pepper shakers. She loved visiting with her many dear friends. Always a smile on her face, she loved to have a good time and could easily bring anyone she was with to laughter. She doted on her parakeets, and then her chickens (bunnies to her) that she could watch from her window at Woodlawn. She found great pleasure in listening to Country Music, which she played continuously and loudly while at home.
Along with her parents, Sylvette is predeceased by her brother, Carl Bowen, Jr., sister, Doreen Bowers, son-in-law, Larry Glidden, and granddaughter, Tawna Glidden.
She is survived by her brother-in-law, Robert Bowers from Arlington, TX, whose phone calls to her were some of her most treasured moments while at Woodlawn, sisters-in-law, Cheryl Bowen, Seabrook, NH, and Mary Jo Lote, Waterford, VT.
She will be sadly missed by her surviving children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Cindy Glidden, Christie (Bob) Clough, Gregory, Logan, Zachary, and Alexander, Dustin (Shannon) Glidden, Journey, Paisley and Magnolia; Duane (Malia) Abbott, Duane (Kati) Abbott II, Solomon, Owen, Kaya and Layla, Derek (Emily) Abbott, Aiden, Daxton and Dezden; Darlene (John) Morse, Christopher (Sarah) Morse, Michelle (Steve Bourque) Morse, Sophia, Maya and Lillian; Carol (Irene) Abbott; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and the Kelley’s, whom she considered family, Richard and Dale, Lisa, Anna, Alyssa and Jack, Rick, Madison, Emma, Abby and Natalie.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held on October 22, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Eastman Cemetery in Sunapee, NH. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.
