Wesley "Larry" Hague, Jr. Obituary

Wesley “Larry” McLaren Hague Jr., 95, died on July 19, 2021 in hospice care at Seasons at Summercrest in Newport, New Hampshire. Born in Seattle, Larry grew up in a naval family and appreciated all things boats including the many intricate models he made as a hobby. He also enjoyed school, starting second grade at five and graduating from MIT with his masters in engineering. In 1960 he started The W.M. Hague Company which he ran, along with his son, Donald, for 47 years.

Larry was passionate about more than boats. He loved tennis and spent his last days watching Wimbledon. He also enjoyed playing and was able to most days of his life. Highlights of his tennis career included several Lake Sunapee Yacht Club and Concord Country Club championships, a national championship in his eighties and earned $64 playing professionally in his nineties! Larry enjoyed other sports as well. His son, Donald, fondly remembers his dad taking him to the first AFL football game between the Boston Patriots and the Denver Broncos at Nickerson field in Boston where tickets were 50 cents each!

During the 1960’s as an activist alongside Reverend Colin Gracey he volunteered with Jonathan Kozol teaching urban youth to excel in standardized testing, and notably served as a bodyguard for Martin Luther King, Jr.  He and Nancy also hosted foreign exchange students, namely, Simon Bainbridge from England, and Tomoko Yamaguchi from Japan.

Other interests included family history, holidays and spirituality. As a descendant of Priscilla Mullens of the Mayflower and General Robert, of Robert’s Rules of Orders, he could trace his lineage back to Colonial America. His grandchildren remember a fun grandpa who loved to cook for an audience. Although he was not the cook in the family, he enjoyed making feasts including fun foods like Matzah balls and sushi. His openness to trying new things extended to his views of spirituality as well. He was well versed in The Bible having read it many times in several languages and he enjoyed being part of all kinds of meditation and wellness groups.

Larry was preceded in death by his ex wife, Nancy, his mother Priscilla, his father, Wesley, his sister, Priscilla, and his brother, John. He is survived by his partner Adeline, son Donald,  daughter Jill, daughter-in-law Naoko and his granddaughters, Eunice and Joelle, and five great grandchildren.
