George Washington Bacon, Jr.

May 10, 1923 ~ May 26, 2016 (age 93) 93 Years Old

George Washington Bacon, Jr. 93 of Goshen NH, formerly of Rehoboth, MA, passed away peacefully but unexpectedly on May 26 at home. He was the husband of Geraldine Bacon (Towne) for 70 years and the father of Heidi Wilcox, with whom he lived, and Gail Stewart and her husband Al Bettencourt of Pascoag, RI. He was the grandfather of Jesse Wilcox of Keene, NH. and brother of John Edward Bacon and is survived by several nieces nephews.  He was the son of the late George W. Bacon and Martha (Wall) Bacon.  He was also the father of the late George W. Bacon, III and the brother of the late Martha (Bacon) Wyatt of Jacksonville, FL.

 

George was born on May 10, 1923 in Raleigh, NC.  to George and Martha (Wall) Bacon.    He lived briefly in Silver Spring FL and St. Petersburg, FL but when his father became ill when he was five years old they moved to Lilesville and built a house on land that was in the family since North Carolina was a colony. As a youngster his main hobbies were collecting stamps and building model airplanes.

 

George enlisted in the Army Air Corps in November of 1940.  He served his country with distinction from 1940 to 1945 where he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Eighth Air Force, 112th Army Air Corps, 392 Bomb Group. He was stationed in England for most of World War, II. He was a Tail Gunner on the B-24s which received the nickname, Liberator. Sometimes he served as a Bombardier.  His last mission was over Berlin. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and 3 Oak Clusters.  (An Oak Cluster is given after a person completes 10 missions). He was recalled to the Army during the Korean Conflict.

 

He was married to Geraldine Bacon on July 6, 1945. His son, George Bacon, III was born the following year.  His son was killed in action on a mission in service of his country in 1975. Births of Gail and Heidi followed in 1949 and 1958.  They lived quite a few years in Longmeadow, MA and Old Lyme, CT  but eventually settled in Rehoboth, MA where they lived for 45 years until 2014, and moved to NH to live with their daughter, Heidi.

 

George worked for Anderson Little for most of his adult life as a store manager and district manager.  Always known as a gentlemen, when he retired from Anderson Little, a co-worker said if you looked up the word gentleman in the dictionary there would be a reference to George Bacon.

 

In retirement, George was an avid gardener, bird watcher and wood craftsman. He made many fine pieces of furniture which decorated their homes. He was a dog lover, and leaves his faithful companion, Emmy.

 

He passed away peacefully at home on May 26.
