Welcome to the memorial page for

Richard Kay

November 8, 2015

Richard Kay, 62, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 8, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital in Lebanon after a short illness.

He was the youngest of four children, born in 1953 to Mary A. & Roger W. Kay, in Portsmouth, NH.

Although he fought and conquered many challenges throughout his life, he never lost his senses of humor and mischief. He was a fiercely loyal friend, and a genuinely compassionate and generous person. He had a stunning smile and a gift for making people laugh, and for making the best of difficult situations.

Trained as a mechanic at the Ford Automotive School in the Bronx in 1973, he worked in the automotive industry for many years, earning Senior Master Technician status in 2000.

He was an adventurous, self-taught cook who delighted in growing his own vegetables,
contriving new recipes, and fiddling with old ones.

A lover of motorcycles and music, he was never without his “tunes,” and he had a love of the natural music of nature. He loved animals and children, and took a special interest in the wildlife of his immediate surroundings, feeding the birds and keeping watch over a clutch of turtles hatched in his backyard this past summer.

He was predeceased by both parents, and leaves behind his long-time partner and companion, Linda Safford of Newport and her son, Kevin of Charlestown.

He is also survived by three sons, Eric Kay and Brendan Kay, of Sedona, Arizona, and Elijah Kay of Richmond, VA, and five grandchildren, Zachary, Alicia, Rebecca, Aspen, & Taylor Kay, as well as several nieces and nephews and two grand nieces. He also leaves behind a sister, Katherine Solomon & her husband, Sol, of Sutton, NH and two brothers, Roger Kay and William Kay, of South Berwick, ME, and many friends who will miss him sorely.

His life will be celebrated at a private memorial service for family and friends in Sutton.
